Banks charge fees for different services that you use with many checking accounts. All banks are required to provide you with a list of the fees they can charge you.
Monthly Maintenance Fee
Also called a monthly service fee. Banks might charge a fee each month just for having the account. You might also be charged a fee if your balance falls below the required minimum.
ATM Use Fee
You will not get charged a fee if you use an ATM located at one of bank branches. If you use an ATM that belongs to another bank or company the other bank or ATM owner may charge you a fee for using their ATM.
Overdraft Fee
An overdraft fee is a charge banks assess for checks you have written without enough money in your account to cover them. Sometimes banks will go ahead and pay to cover the check anyway, and then notify you to make a deposit into your account to cover the overdraft. Some banks will charge you both an overdraft fee and the non-sufficient funds fee. Bouncing checks can become quite a costly mistake.
Non-Sufficient Funds Fee
These are somewhat expensive fees banks apply if you bounce a check. Non-sufficient funds (NSF) means you don't have enough money in your account to cover a check you wrote. Banks will automatically charge a fee to your account when you write a check for an amount that exceeds your checking account balance.
Stop Payment Fee
If you lose a check or need to make sure that the bank does not pay a check, you can request a Stop Payment. There is a fee for this service. It is important to note that the bank might not be able to stop payment on that check before it is paid, so it is important to notify the bank as soon as possible.
